About the Group
Goulding Community Tap Dancers is a non-profit community group originally formed to provide summer classes for TDSB Continuing Education tap dance students at Goulding Community Centre. Before long, due to cutbacks, we were providing year-round classes for adults and seniors on Wednesday evenings.
Our mandate has always been to provide friendly classes as economically as possible and to welcome everyone. We have young adult, middle-aged and senior members. We have also had a couple of exceptional 12-year-olds, several octogenarians, and one renowned member a little older. Students come from all over Toronto, and York Region as well, for our unique classes.
Instructor Marilyn Huziak began teaching at Goulding Community Centre over 20 years ago. Many members of Goulding Community Tap Dancers began dancing with her while taking Parks & Rec or Continuing Ed classes here. Having only started dancing as an adult, she has insight into teaching adult and senior beginners. She has developed many interesting and fun techniques for teaching traditional and innovative tap dance steps to all skill levels. She loves to apply these steps not only to standard tap dance music, but also many unconventional styles of music, making the classes entertaining and inspiring for all ages.
Run by a small Board of Directors, Goulding Community Tap Dancers is headed by Derrik Emery who has taken on most administrative duties. His infectious enthusiasm is a driving force of the group and his careful accounting has kept class fees low for many years.
